What is AANChOR?
The All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance is the result of science diplomacy efforts involving countries from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean which aims to enhance marine research and innovation cooperation in all Atlantic nations, from the Arctic to Antarctica. TechOceanS is involved in the alliance as one of The All-Atlantic Ocean Research Projects (commonly called “sister projects”) which has received European funds to run ocean research activities that are aligned with the objectives of the Galway and Belém Statements, contributing to the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Community.
A new publication entitled “All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance A success story of ocean science diplomacy” tells the story of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, and the key roll the European Union, together with international partners along and across the Atlantic Ocean have played in its successes.
The science diplomacy efforts of AANChOR are exemplified by the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Forum an unmissable event which AANChOR hosts each year. This year the event was co-hosted by the United States and Brazil, in collaboration with the European Commission, over two events between May and July 2022. Numerous online side events also took place. The Forum provided a platform for innovative thinking using the best practices and online approaches to share knowledge, create synergies and co-design actions to support decision making in the Atlantic region.
Outcomes from the Scientific Event were highlighted at the Ministerial Event in Washington, D.C. which was streamed live on the week of July 12-14. The event culminated in the signing of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research & Innovation Alliance Declaration. The Declaration outlines the vision of the All-Atlantic building upon collaboration between existing initiatives in the Atlantic Ocean and sets a common path forward for ocean research and innovation cooperation in the Atlantic, from Pole to Pole, for the next decade.
