Yesterday, TechOceanS project hosted a dynamic online workshop, bringing together key stakeholders from science, industry and policy to discuss the latest advancements in marine technologies and their integration into policy frameworks. The event featured a distinguished panel, including Patrizio Mariani (Euromarine & Mission Atlantic Project), Felix Margirier (Alseamar Innovation & Services), Sheena Fennell (P&O Maritime Logistics), Deepak Marok (DEFRA), and Gabriele Pieri (NAUTILOS coordinator).
The agenda kicked off with an overview of the TechOceanS project, led by coordinator Matt Mowlem, who introduced the key technologies developed within the project, including advancements in samplers, eDNA detection, cytometry, and machine learning for ocean monitoring. The rapid-fire round presented cutting-edge tools like the UVP and LOC, demonstrating the project's innovative approach to tackling pollutants such as microplastics and enhancing real-time marine data collection.
During the panel discussion, participants explored how these technologies can be best applied for maximum policy impact and to address emerging environmental challenges. Panelists discussed the need for stronger collaboration between scientists, industry leaders, and policymakers to ensure that technological innovations are fully leveraged for sustainable ocean management.
The event concluded with a presentation of the draft TechOceanS Policy Roadmap, which outlines recommendations in seven key areas to guide further innovation development, implementation and policy integration. Participants shared feedback on the roadmap, which will be used to inform subsequent iterations.
This workshop was a crucial step in bridging the gap between innovation and policy, ensuring that the technologies developed in projects like TechOceanS and NAUTILOS can contribute meaningfully to the global effort to protect marine ecosystems.
